past, present, future, planWhich direction do you see your life moving?
Do you know that where you determine your mindset to be will significantly affect the direction your life and career is heading towards?
Even though time always moves forward, not everyone can keep up. The human mind tends to wander between time zones including the present, the future, and the past.
Many people tend to stay for a while at a single point of time in their life.
Spending too much time in one place can inhibit your ability to grow and thrive. With that in mind, let’s figure out where you’re living right now and how it can affect your business, and overall, your life.

Signs You’re Living in the Past

If you’ve been paying attention to pop culture lately, you’ve likely noticed a huge 90s revival. Movies, TV shows, and more are making a big comeback from that decade, indicating the power of nostalgia.
Another common trend is how there seems to be a stronger divide between the old and the young, with the older generation often reminiscing how better times were during their day.
While it’s nice to take a stroll down memory lane, living in the past can prevent you from moving forward. Here are some signs that you’re always looking back:
You Compare Then and Now – While you may not start every sentence with “back in my day,” you tend to focus on how many things have changed over the years. In many cases, you don’t agree with the changes.
You Dwell on Past Mistakes – Typically, we see the past with rose-colored glasses, but mistakes and cringe-worthy moments can creep in as well. If you keep replaying these incidents in your head, it shows that you haven’t moved on from them.
If your mind wanders around your past mistakes or victories all the time, you’re like a person in a swamp trying to move through the thick, mud-ridden water. Eventually, you’ll get stuck, then slowly drown in your past.

Signs You’re Living in the Future

Planning ahead is always helpful, but not if you spend too much thinking about what could be. If you’re living in the future, you might exhibit one of these habits:
You Worry All the Time – Although no one knows what the future holds, there is no guarantee that it will be terrible. If you’re always worried about what may happen tomorrow, next week, or five years from now, it’s hard to focus on the present.
Your Head is in the Clouds – The opposite of a worrier is a dreamer. You may spend most of your time imagining how great things will be when or if you reach a particular goal (“once I close a certain number of deals, I’ll buy my dream home!”). While it’s good to have positive aspirations, you still have to put in the work to achieve those objectives.
Remember, the future is uncertain, and there are a lot of factors that can change things. If you focus too much on the future, you’ll be like a driver who’s looking too far ahead that you can’t see what’s in front of you anymore.

Is it Better to Live in the Present?

Technically speaking, you should be able to move through the past, present, and future easily. Spending too much time in one place can be detrimental.
The past helps shape who you are through experience, while the future enables you to determine where you want to go.
Think of your life as an equation that looks like this: past + present = future. While the past is fixed, the present and future are shifting variables that change based on your actions.
Need to get a better handle on that equation?
